Our Awesome Evening of Music

So the exams are all over (for this term at least, don't forget Amber has a big one coming up in September) and we were looking for something fun and interesting to do on a Friday evening. Ever since Shannon's ballet schedule got shifted so that she doesn't have classes on Friday anymore, we've had more time to go out as a family - recently, we went to watch Shazam (Avengers was not an option for several reasons), which was quite fun.

So last night, I gave the kids an option of either visiting the museum (which closes late on Fridays too!) or watching some free concerts at the Esplanade. Naturally, they chose the concerts (mainly because we went to the museum recently and also they're not really into art) which was fine by me, because I planned for that selection too!

What a treat: 2 musical styles/acts in one night, and for free!
First up, we were at the Esplanade Concourse watching Rebecca Burch and Kevin Kong strum up some wonderful acoustic favourites from the 80s. They kicked it off with an awesome rendition of Every Breath You Take from The Police and carried it with other hits from A-ha, Cyndi Lauper, Richard Marx, Indecent Obsession and the like. Rebecca's voice is truly one that's meant for acoustic music, sweet, smooth and soulful. You can imagine her singing practically any song and making it sound so good. Kevin, which we've seen singing before previously, was really good on his guitar and his voice was just as good, but not as sweet as Rebecca's, obviously. I found the Facebook Live video recorded by Kevin, watch it here!

Right after that set ended, we headed straight out to the Outdoor Theatre where the band Rock Rosettes was getting ready to, what do you call it, ROCK! They played a non-stop 45-minute set American rock hits from the 80s with anthems from Journey, Heart, Bon Jovi, Guns N Roses, Joan Jett & The Blackhearts and more! The lead singer had such a powerful voice that she easily pulled off Alone by Heart, and you know how high Ann Wilson sings in that song!! The female drummer (which is the leader of the band) was also spectacular and kept the rhythm fast, tight and hard rockin'! What a great example of girl power! All in, it felt like we (maybe minus the kids) were back in the 80s, listening to live rock music, tapping our feet and singing loudly along!

Overall, a fantastic evening out. Nourished in our stomachs (we ate at Marina Square) and our ears (a bit deaf from the rock concert, but it went away quickly). Singapore has some great musicians and bands out there, I guess you just have to go looking for them and be open to spending family time doing different things instead of sitting in front of a screen or playing with your gadgets.

Rock on!!
