A $1 Ice Cream still works
Regardless of what some motivational, parenting or nutritional experts say, a simple $1 ice-cream still works great as a reward for children over 10 years old. Besides the value for money factor, it is relatively refreshing and not overly unhealthy, I think (and hope).
Who can resist a cone of ice-cream from Dad? |
Compared to the expensive alternatives (which, accordingly to me taste generally the same, and also, you don't want to raise the expectations too high which can not later be brought down) like Frozen Yoghurt and designer gelato, ice-cream from Macdonalds or Burger King (or even KFC) is still my go-to choice for a quick, cheap and satisfactory reward or a no-reason-treat - just because it is a hot day, or just because you're my child.
Some parenting experts say that rewards are not a good idea all the time because you are sending a signal that your love has to be earned. However, from a parenting (or Christian) standpoint, a parent's love should be free, unconditional and always available. I don't think that means non-stop,, free-flow ice-cream every day - but every once in a while, why not?
