Did you pass your exams?
When your children are in Primary school, the question would be “Did you get an A? A-star perhaps?" When they get to Secondary school, the question would be “Did you pass? Did you manage to not fail?”
I think when University comes around, you would be “asking Did you manage to finish the paper? Did you wake up for it?”
As they grow up, examinations get tough to the point where you cannot really sit down with them to help them out – you must trust that they have the sensibility and responsibility to know how to prepare and that the effort they put in will determine the final outcome. That is something you can’t really teach someone who doesn’t want to learn – it has to be experienced, the failure, the desperation – it might be too late though.
Having said that, the days have arrived when a 50% passing mark is good enough. How far down our standards have come!
