What’s With The Loud Music
Nigel needs to have his music turned on in his room, blaring
away almost all the time – and
this while he’s studying, sleeping, eating
bathing … It’s not the soft or classical type, but the loud and irritating,
sometimes Spanish Latino type which drives everyone up the wall.
I remember liking to listen to music in my room when I was
younger, but nowadays I prefer peaceful silence, which helps me to think better
and concentrate on what I’m
doing. I even used to be a big fan of dance, house and electronic music – but the bottom-line is that it is
practically impossible to get any mental work done with that turned on.

Which is why when Nigel claims he can study with rap music
going on in the background, I find it hard to believe. And even if, as he
claims, he can focus on his studying, how much of those words on the paper is
actually going in? Wouldn’t it be
easier and more productive if the music were gentle and soft? But then again,
these are things that you just can’t argue
with a teen. Try as hard as you might, they have thicker skulls than you think
and typically feel like they know everything, and that’s where the problem lies.
