The last run
Tomorrow afternoon, Nigel is going to run his last race for the school. Already over the weekend, he reminded me that he had just attended his last training session, and he sounded slightly sad.
He has been in the track and field team for 3 years, beginning in Primary 4 and to be honest, he hasn't really taken it too seriously. He's tried hard, but there was never really that spark that pushed him to his limits - he always took things in his stride and ran to his 100% - but not that aggressive 110% which you can see in some of the boys.
This year the coach put pressure on him to perform and he's done better than ever - although I sense that there is still that tiger within him that has not yet been unleashed. It's just waiting for the right time, the right emotion, the right word to trigger it - but I doubt it will be tomorrow. It will take time and maturity and if he keeps running in secondary school, we might see it emerge.
I believe tomorrow we will still see that consistent long strides that build up momentum over the 600m distance, looking to capitalise on the tiring opponents as they round the bends. He has that energy inside to maintain, overtake and outlast. What is missing is that hunger, drive and passion that will force his legs into action and set the track behind him on fire - but that will come another day.
For tomorrow, give it your everything Nigel - 3 years of training will come down to 105 seconds.
