Children = Always Happy

I recently heard a talk about why someone volunteered to teach young kids, and one of her main points was because "children are by nature happy" and it is such a pleasure to be around such creatures which are constantly in a state of euphoria and joy. In latin, the word "children" means "short cheerful creatures". Just kidding.

But it is true - if you ever hang around kids, you will notice they are by default over-jubilant, full of energy, excitable and very hard to discourage. You can scold them, tell them to stop jumping around like monkeys and so on. They might stop, cry, get upset or get angry with you. But within several seconds, they are back on their feet and making a nuisance of themselves again. This is called resilience.

With the Aw kids, from August 2011.
Somewhere along the way, as part of the growing process, they loose that spark, that jolly intoxicated lust for life which seemed to have been implanted into their little bodies the day they were born. Maybe it is the stress of school work, puberty, peer pressure, electronic devices beaming radiation into their heads. Whatever it is, it will fade and get replaced by moody indifference, cynicism and sarcastic remarks mumbled under their breadth or directly into your face. We all went through this, so we know.

Let's not kid ourselves, our children are now at the happiest time they will be in their lives. Their young innocent lives have not been tainted by unpaid bills, stressful work assignments and having to maintain a blog site that nobody reads.

Have fun with them and bring out happiness that is bubbling just under their skins, waiting to be unleashed by a fun joke or a massive tickle attack. I tell you, they are like little sticks of joyful dynamite just waiting to be set alight!
