Girls and Boys

Here are things that our kids do which irritate the living daylights out of us - but we (at least me) have started to ignore because I think it's what they do. For example, you can't tell a lion to stop roaring or keep a bee away from a flower.

Girls love to leap in the air like ballerinas trying to get across a room with cockroaches on the floor. They also like to spin and squeal and follow behind you like your shadow waiting for the perfect moment to shock you to death. They can make grumpy faces at will and at a very early age can manipulate you with (crocodile) tears and unnecessary hugs.

Boys like to do things to irritate girls like take their hair bands and hide them. Then they will say mischievous things under their breadth, like funny pronunciations of their friend's names, or call everything "lame". They can not focus on a single thing for more than 5 minutes and have a penchant for mechanical pencils and stationery of any sort.

Conflicts happen in the car very regularly. This afternoon, Amber was trying to play basketball in the backseat and Nigel kept blocking her slam-dunk. Playing with a ball in the cramp environment of a sub-compact is challenging enough, but with the windows down, the excitement becomes very real. Nigel claimed he was trying to prevent the ball from flying out and causing an accident, but we all know that he was just trying to irritate Amber and inside, he was just jealous that she had a ball.

Very often, we get screaming, laughing and crying - simultaneously, but by different people. It is weird how three different emotions can be expressed all at the same time with children who are basically sitting side by side. This can be distracting and damaging to one's morale, especially when one is trying to retain control of a vehicle on a fast moving expressway. I chose to ignore this and let them sort it out on their own. Occasionally I can't help but make fun of someone's name too. That is when Celest turns to me with a look that I can only understand to mean "You're not helping."
