Our hot spin into town
Last weekend, I decided to take Nigel for a spin to let him have a break from his exam preparation - it was also a good chance for us to spend some time together and also let him to stretch his legs, literally (as I made his bicycle seat a bit higher than usual).
We rode to the end of the ECP track and went into Tanjong Rhu with the intent to get into the Marina Bay Golf Club, cross the Marina Barrage and enter Gardens By The Bay. One of the reasons we went there was to look for his grandparents and sisters who were visiting the gardens on a walking visit to see Tulips. Given we were on bicycles, we were not allowed to actually cycle into the gardens but given how lucky we were, we spotted them immediately as they came down the escalator at the main visitor center - we were relaxing in the shade of the building. Nigel wanted to leave me behind and dash into the huge man-made freezer, but I held him back with the tempting proposition of a cold drink at the next 7-11.
So we kept on riding until we came across a rather large 7-11 along Robinson's Road. This one had tables and chairs inside, like a small cafe.
Robinson's Road on a hot Saturday afternoon is practically dead. The bustling life of the business district goes home on weekends leaving wide pavements (mostly) and sidewalks to cycle down. Nigel went zipping between pillars and bus-stops, halting only for red-lights and the odd pedestrain.
So we sat inside the 7-11 for around 20 mins, sipping from a large Slurpee, enjoying the cool air-conditioning and talking about life. It was a great way to chill with my son, who is growing up way too fast.
After a while, we grabbed another bottle of drink, paid for it and did the reverse path home in the sweltering heat. The frozen Slurpee gave us the extra boost we needed for the 40 minute ride back, which I'm surprised Nigel covered with minimal complaints. It was probably just 6 months ago when we would have stopped every 5 minutes complaining about everything from tiredness to a pain in his backside.
