Sorrow by words - What a concept

I was just thinking about how the mind of a child progresses and matures intellectually.

When they are really young, the only way to get them to cry is maybe by accidentally hurting them physically, or denying them food, milk and so on. This is the human brain reacting on a purely physical level.

As they grow and their mental powers increase, simple ideas and words have the ability to get them upset. The word "no" for example, is an amazing concept. It is powerful enough to show authority, cause unhappiness and teach a youngster the discipline of denial, delayed gratification and prepare them for life in the real world.

The other day I was taking a shower and Amber was knocking on the door. I heard her, through the sound of the falling water, asking me to give her Blu-Tack (her favourite item now). I shouted "No!". When I got out, she was sitting rather grumpily on the floor outside the bathroom, mumbling about how she would buy her own Blu-Tack when she starting working.
