Mum and Dad: Trapped in Bangkok

As this global chaos of financial turmoil, terrorism and political instability unfolds, Mum & Dad decided to take a holiday trip to Bangkok just one day before the airport was overrun by anti-government demonstrators and closed indefinitely. In other words, if they left Singapore one day later, their flight would have been cancelled. So instead of being stuck in Singapore, they are stuck in Thailand.

Instead of not being able to go for their vacation, they are now on a prolonged one. Which would you choose? Of course, Bangkok is currently not a good place to be, with the rioting and so on. Funny thing is even though we've been reading about all this upheaval going on there, I still have friends that can go there and enjoy the food, clubbing and shopping. I guess the city is big enough to cater to everyone's needs. Well, but it's the airport now - and you can't miss that nor be unaffected by it. What a mess, I must add.

Which is why Mum and Dad are going to be taking a train trip down to Penang and catching a flight from there. Amazing if you ask me. Fred volunteered to pick them up from Penang in his car. That's even more amazing.

Update: They were on a train to Penang and have already boarded a plane there back to Singapore and will be arriving later this evening! What an adventure.

Final update: They took a train to Hadyai. Managed to get a Thai taxi to the border. Switched to a Malaysian taxi there which took them to Penang in time to catch their 8.30pm flight back to Singapore - but only after they had some authentic Penang Laksa. I get tired just thinking about it their 27 hour travel adventure.
