My humps
The invention that summarizes the ridiculous nature of humankind must surely be the road hump. As our race constantly innovates to produce faster transportation, better traffic networks, safer vehicles – we, somehow, end up actually going faster (duh!). And as we have it, some of us don’t know how to slow down or even stop. Have you seen someone actually stop at a stop-sign recently??
The hump – a symbol of our inability to regulate ourselves - forcing engineers to place extra tar on an otherwise rather flat and smooth road so slow us down. Why? Because we, the mature adults we are, don’t know how to do it. And I’ve still seen cars literally flying over humps with all 4 wheels off the ground (hmm .. maybe that was in Starsky & Hutch).
These numerous humps, are they working? The thinking then is that if there’s no hump then we speed on by. Let us learn how to control ourselves, think about consequences and consider for a moment the safety of others on the road. Are we really in a rush? Is there a life and death situation we’re heading to? Sometimes there is; mostly there isn’t.
