Green Being

This week is Green Transport Week - an effort by the Singapore Environment Council to encourage people to (for a week?) think about environmentally friendly ways of commute. Can we do this? Are we disciplined enough? I for one am guilty - I took mum's car to work today - but I was late for a 9.30am meeting. I felt bad though - like I wasn't doing my part.

So, it goes beyond just not-driving. It's a whole change in lifestyle. It's waking up earlier to catch that ride, or take the train. It's not about not having a car, it's about having a point - are you willing to take those extra steps to try to do your part to save the earth?

High petrol prices are good huh. I heard someone say - people only think about things if it hurts them in the wallet. So now, people are thinking about hybrid and fuel efficient cars, taking the MRT, walking, not owning a car, planning trips wisely and so on. They're not concerned about the environment (most aren't I bet), they're concerned about their money. Whatever gets the job done I say.

Why save the environment? If you don't, will anyone else? Do people recycle their used material? Not many. Sooner than you think, the planet will tip past a point of no return (if it hasn't already done so) and global warming will make temperatures and water levels rise. As a friend once told me - the planet will correct itself and will get rid of the "pests" - and then a new age will begin without these offensive beings that tried to destroyed it, which means no humans.

What type of world do we intend to live for our future generations? For the whole of this week - I'm going to try and not drive anymore. Do the right thing.
